Carr Jam 1981 Despite coming off a monster ballad with Hot in the Shade’s Michael Bolton-penned “Forever,” Kiss was plagued by instability due to Simmons and Stanley’s extravagance; worse, drummer Eric Carr succumbed to cancer in November 1991. But even with the grunge movement in full effect, Kiss was luckily recognized as a major influence on everyone from Trent Reznor to Lenny Kravitz — their ’70s legacy intact despite the band’s often dubious choices in the ’80s. And even though they, too, were on the brink of commercial extinction, being savvy businessmen first and foremost, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley fully understood the lay of the land. Not only did they need to make a definitive record, they needed to completely re-invent themselves, visually and sonically. The first step was to secure hard rock veteran Eric Singer to fill Carr’s shoes; next, the band rekindled its relationship with producer Bob Ezrin. In 1992 KISS needed to make a musical statement with their next album. The previous two studio albums had seen the band lose focus and fall into the trap of looking for a big Pop Metal hit. So, being savvy in business, they rose to the task by putting the pieces into place. Revenge may not be perfect, but no KISS album is. It’s got several great tracks (“Unholy,” “Thou Shalt Not,” “Heart of Chrome,” “Domino,” “I Just Wanna”) and several other strong tracks (“Tough Love,” “Spit,” “Paralyzed”). The previously released cover song, “God Gave Rock and Roll To You II,” was solid, and they did a great job of reworking it into a KISS song. “Take It Off,” is solid, musically, but juvenile, lyrically. “Every Time I Look At You,” is a good Power Ballad, but it is out of place on an album like Revenge, and Paul’s raspy vocal undermines the song. But the positives far outweigh the negatives, musically, and the audio production is outstanding. The album is crisp, clear, and punchy, while still retaining a bit of that 70’s dirt & grit. It sounds the way a KISS album should sound. So, overall, Revenge is almost exactly the album KISS needed following the lost years of Crazy Nights and Hot In The Shade. Unfortunately for them, the music landscape was changing in 1992 and it came out a year too late to have a big impact sales-wise. But despite the album’s mildly disappointing sales numbers it is still one of their better albums. Kiss ~ Crazy Nights (1988) CD 1998 Mercury Records Europe •• NEW ••

KISS Crazy Nights AUDIO CD BRAND NEW FACTORY SEALED Mercury Records 558 861-2 UPC | 731455886122 Made in Europe 1988, 1998 Paul Stanley ~ Guitar, Lead Vocals Gene Simmons ~ Bass, Vocals Bruce Kulick ~ Lead Guitar, Vocals Eric Carr ~ Drums, Vocals TRACK LISTING 01. Turn Of The Night 11. Thief In The Night When the Asylum tour concluded in April 1986, KISS knew they needed a break. After ten months of rest and relaxation (one of the longest vacations KISS has ever had in its career), Paul Stanley, Bruce Kulick, Eric Carr and Gene Simmons regrouped in Los Angeles with producer Ron Nevison to record Crazy Nights (originally titled Who Dares Wins). While writing material for this album, Stanley confronted Simmons about his lack of involvement in KISS’ overall direction. Fortunately, Simmons understood his partner’s argument and his responsibility to the band; he agreed to make KISS his number-one priority as they completed the album. Crazy Nights was released in September 1988, and proved to be another milestone for KISS with three smash singles and videos for “Crazy, Crazy Nights,” “Reason to Live,” and “Turn on the Night.” Crazy Nights hit #18 in Billboard and became KISS’ fourth consecutive Platinum album since 1983’s Lick It Up. Although KISS did not tour outside the United States for Asylum, they certainly did for Crazy Nights: Canada, England, Italy, France and Japan (the first time KISS had performed there since 1978!) were invaded with an upgraded version of the Asylum stage, proving that good things come to those who wait. Before the completion of the Crazy Nights tour in October 1988, KISS became involved with several projects. First, the band played vintage KISS classics at various small clubs in New York and London to celebrate the band’s fifteenth anniversary. In August, KISS played England’s famous Monsters of Rock festival for the first time. In November, Smashes. Thrashes and Hits (a compilation album with two new tracks) was released to commemorate the group’s history. As the 1980s came to a close, KISS took another extended vacation before writing songs for their next record, Hot in the Shade. ~ Robert V.
